  • Could affect how the child learns trust
  • Child could need more time physically with the parents

DIVORCE AND ITS EFFECTS ON DIFFERENT AGES: TODDLERS

  • (3yrs-5yrs)
  • At this age children begin cognitive development which means their level of thinking is becoming more complex
  • Children think at this age that they are in control of their environment, therefore they may believe the divorce is their fault.

DIVORCE & ITS EFFECTS ON DIFFERENT AGES: ELEMENTARY

  • (6yrs-11yrs)
  • Children may have trouble interacting with peers and become distant.
  • Children at this age may feel abandonment or like their parents are divorcing them.

DIVORCE & ITS EFFECTS ON DIFFERENT AGES: EARLY/LATE ADOLESENSE

  • (11yrs-18yrs)
  • Early adolescence: Children are beginning to become extremely aware of their surroundings but they are more concerned with their peers.
  • Later adolescence: Divorce could emotionally hurt them but teens are generally more concerned with their friends and spending time on their own.

OUTCOMES OF DIVORCE: ADOLESENCE

  • Children may get too emotionally involved or not involved at all
  • Adolescence tend to side with one parent and terminate the relationship with the other.

  • First Marriage 45% to 50% marriages end in divorce
  • Second Marriage 60% to 67% marriages end in divorce
  • Third Marriage 70% to 73% marriages end in divorce
