CELEBRATION

ORDINATION

• Holy Orders is celebrated in three degrees
• 1. The episcopacy (ministerial)
• 2. The presbyterate (ministerial)
• 3. Diaconate (helps serve other 2)
• Ordination is only performed by a bishop

ORDINATION OF BISHOPS

• The pope chooses bishops for this high priesthood
• Sacrament conferred through laying on of hands and prayer
• After prayer of consecration : anointed with Sacred Chrism
• Bishop is given ring, mitre (hat), and crosier (staff)
• Symbolize fidelity, authority, and shepherd of Church

ORDINATION OF PRIESTS

• Man may become priest with assent of community and bishop
• Call on the Church to pray for ordinand who kneels before bishop
• Laying on of hands and consecratory prayer
• Priest given stole (scarf like vestment) and chasuble (outer vestment)
• Symbolize authority and different colors for liturgical seasons

ORDINATION OF DEACONS

• Transitional deacons(going to priesthood) and permanent
• Transitional deacons must be celibate and remain so
• Bishop confers sacrament by laying on of hands and prayer
• Stole (fabric band), dalmatic (outer vestment), Book of Gospels
• Authority and mission to proclaim Gospel of Christ
