RUSSIAN CIVIL WAR

BOLSHEVIK REVOLUTION

  • Many disgruntled peasants blamed the Czar for the current economic ruin and for the deaths of soldiers in WWII
  • In 1917 a group of female protestors persuaded the soldiers sent to stop the riot, to join them

THE BOLSHEVIK REVOLUTION

  • After Czar Nicholas the II was removed from power a provisional government made up of the elite took power
  • Despite promises this government was unable to severe involvement in the war
  • This is the start of the rise of the Bolshevik party

THE BOLSHEVIK REVOLUTION

  • The Bolshevik party favored workers and peasants rather than elites
  • Support for the provisional government fell after failed attacks
  • With support from the working class the Bolsheviks were able to win vital elections that took place that September

CAUSES

  • Direct cause was the Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
  • Indirect causes like the doubling of the French and German armies between 1870 and 1914 were also major causes
  • In addition, the world was now global and large countries were capable of making weapons of mass destruction and had the economic stability to do so. the stage was set for a war

TIMELINE

  • June 28- Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
  • July 5- Kaiser Wilhelm declares support for Austria offers "Blank Cheque"
  • July 23-Austria gives Serbia an ultimatum and Serbia agrees to all but one term

TIMELINE

  • July 28- Despite Serbias compliancy Austria refused the Serbian reply and Russian troops deployed in a partial mobilization in defense of Serbia
  • July 30- As conflict escalated Russia order a general mobilization
  • August 1- Germans declared war on Russia and France mobilized their troops

  • August 2- Germany sent a request to Belgium to send troops through
  • August 3- Germans entered Belgium despite Belgiums refusal. The British gave Germany a choice either evacuate Belgium or face militaristic repercussions
  • August 4- British declared war on Germany

  • The prevention of an Irish Civil War
  • The internal French disputes over income taxes and length of military service
  • The growing disapproval the Tsar in Russia

VERSAILLES PEACE CONFERENCE

  • The meeting of the victorious powers to determine the repercussion for the countries who lost
  • Resulted in the League of Nations
  • Placed all the blame on Germany in addition so severe financial penalties

THE WAR RESULTED IN

  • Women's Suffrage
  • Inflation of American markets went to by 15%
  • Eventually The European Union
  • Plummeting birth rates
  • Modern Warfare (ex. Gas, aircrafts, etc)
  • A strong sense of nationalism instilled by the governments via propaganda
