Ordeal by water

  • The accused had their hands and feet tied together. They were then thrown into water. If they floated they were guilty but if they sank they were innocent.

  • Extra work and fines were prohibbeted or the hands of the guilty were cut off

  • Had to walk a distance around 9 feet either by holding a red hot iron or over a red hot plough share.

Ordeal by combat

  • The two parties had to fight and whoever won was considered innocent.
