PRESENTATION OUTLINE
GENERAL INFORMATION
- Dates: July 11-15
- Time: 5:15-8:00 pm
- Light Supper from 5:15-5:45 (Please encourage parents to stay with their child(ren) during supper if possible)
- Nursery will be provided for workers children only (Please let me know if you will need nursery)

CARPENTRY SHOP:
As the kids work to make wooden dreidels, you’ll talk with them about what it was like to be a carpenter in ancient Jerusalem.
POTTERY SHOP:
You will teach the children how to make coil pots or bowls while giving them a glimpse into the life of a Potter in ancient Jerusalem.
WEAVING SHOP:
You will teach the importance of your trade and the demand for skilled weavers in Jerusalem while the children learn to make woven matzo covers.
HERBS & SPICES SHOP:
As kids work to gather bags of herbs or spices and learn to grind them on the pestle, you’ll talk with them about how people used different herbs and spices in ancient Jerusalem.
BAKERY:
As kids mix and knead their dough, you’ll talk with them about the importance of bread in ancient Jerusalem. This dough will be used to make unleavened bread that the kids will eat during their tribe time.
MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS SHOP:
As kids work to make their own harps, you’ll talk with them about what it was like to be a musical instrument maker in ancient Jerusalem.
JEWELRY-MAKING SHOP:
As Tribes work to make beaded necklaces or learn to hammer texture into metal disks, you’ll talk with them about what it was like to be a jeweler in ancient Jerusalem.
BASKET-MAKING SHOP:
As kids work to make woven baskets, you’ll teach these apprentices about what it’s like to be a basket maker in Jerusalem.
SHOPKEEPERS
- Will need one volunteer per shop.
- I will provide historical background info/daily material1-2 weeks prior to start
- Shops will be in the main room of the family life center.

TRIBE LEADERS
- 1 adult leader per tribe
- Hopefully, will have enough middle and high school volunteers to have 1-2 assistants for each tribe.
- 8-10 kids per tribe- mixed ages or no?
TRIBE LEADERS CONTINUED
- 10 minute opening tribe time- discuss daily bible drama while learning/experiencing traditional Jewish family customs.
- 15 min closing tribe time- Bible times snack, connecting events of the day and how to relate what has been learned to real life.
- Participate in opening and closing celebration time with tribe.
- Accompany tribe to other activities and help kids with projects if needed.
TRIBE LEADERS CONTINUED
- Tribe homes will be in main room of family life center.
- Tribe totes will be at each home with supplies for each day.
- Prep Material will be provided 1-2 weeks prior to start
VILLAGE PLAYGROUND LEADER
- 1-2 adult leader(s)
- 1-2 middle/high school assistants
- Will be located either outside or in youth wing
- Will teach kids games that were popular for children in ancient Jerusalem.
GAMES:
- Hanna Ala Nahar- similar to what we call Duck-Duck-Goose
- Ha ‘ Avarat Kadur- “passing the ball”- done in a zig-zag motion using your feet
- Dreidel game
- Athletic Games- Discus, Javelin (using pool noodles), and Standing Long Jump
- Mill Game - similar to Tic-Tac-To
- Folk Dance- The Hora (Israeli) and The Dabka (Lebanese)
SYNAGOGUE SCHOOL LEADER
- Hassan- position comparable to that of a deacon in the Catholic Church today
- 1 adult volunteer
- This person will guide children and adults as they experience a traditional school setting and teach some of the Bible-times laws and traditions.
- Historical background information, teaching material, and daily information will be provided 1-2 weeks prior to VBS start date.
SYNAGOGUE SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
- Each child will receive and wear a yarmulke
- Lessons on the Torah- scrolls containing the Books of Law- Gen, Ex, Lev, Num, and Deut.
- Seder Plate/Passover Meal Lesson
- Practice writing the Hebrew alphabet on clay tablets or scroll paper using a feather quill
- Each child will make a telfallin- a small box with scriptures inside, worn on the forehead. These are worn during weekday morning prayers as a reminder to keep the Lord’s instructions in your mind and on your lips.
SEDAR PLATE
- Haroseth- mixture of walnuts, apples, cinnamon, and sugar. Represents the mud the Israelite slaves used to make bricks for Pharoah.
- Parsley dipped in salt water- represents springtime (when Passover is celebrated). The salt water is a reminder of the tears God’s people shed when they were enslaved.
- Egg- represents springtime
- Bone- represents the sacrificial lamb, whose blood was spread on the doorposts. The blood was a sign to the angel to pass over the home.
- Horseradish- or other bitter herb- represents the bitter affliction of slavery
- Matzo bread- reminds of the time when God’s people were enslaved

INTERACTIVE CHARACTERS
- Roman Gaurd- wanders around marketplace looking over people shoulders, making comments about the radical character that is Jesus.
- The Wise One- walks around marketplace interacting with kids, answering any questions they may have about the days lesson, etc.
- Tax Collector
- Beggar- sits at the entrance of the marketplace begging for money or food (this person will also serve as checking for pre-registration.
KITCHEN STAFF
- Will prepare light supper each day- free for participants. Other family members, siblings, parents, etc. will have to pay for meal. Price?
- These people will also assist tribes with the actual baking of the bread for each tribe.
- Would like 3-4 Volunteers here.
- Decide on weekly supper menu…..
PROTECTION OF CHILDREN TRAINING IS REQUIRED FOR ALL VOLUNTEERS!!
— will get a list of names of all those who need this training and will schedule training session in near future.
Please participate in wearing authentic attire. We want to make this as “real” and immersive as possible for these kids.

FUNDRAISING

- Each shop will need canopy style tent.
- LOTS of fabric (neutral, solid colors, striped patterns)

- Does anyone have a potter’s wheel, mortar and pestle stones, a Weaver’s Loom, antique instruments (again for decoration/not to be used or touched)
- Large cardboard boxes/refrigerator boxes
- Artificial fruits
