FORM
- Small group differentiated instruction at TIER 1 of MTSS; students are at a similar reading level.
- Supports students in developing reading proficiency
- Acknowledges that children bring different backgrounds and instructional experiences to the reading process
Function - how does work?
- Slightly challenging texts
- Targeted teaching
Guided reading is not a stand-alone. Each guided reading lesson should build on the lessons you teach the whole class.
Balancing the Reading Program
Interactive read aloud...
- ...allows teachers to introduce students to engaging, entertaining and thought-provoking literature
- When students are actively listening to and discussing a text, all of the strategic action for comprehending are in operation
- The teacher is able to mode fluent and expressive reading, demonstrate how readers think, and elicit student discussion throug accountable talk.
Shared Reading
- Whole class, it is often used for focus lessons (mini-lessons).
- Students have a copy of the text or a display on the interactive whiteboard so they can follow along.
- A variety of genres are used.
Independent, Self-Selected Reading
- Creates a love for reading by knowing your students' reading interest.
- Students should have an opportunity each day to read books they select themselves.

Review and Routines are necessary in order to insure that students are successful working in small groups during guided reading. Student will need to solve problems without asking for your help.
