FORM

• Small group differentiated instruction at TIER 1 of MTSS; students are at a similar reading level.
• Supports students in developing reading proficiency
• Acknowledges that children bring different backgrounds and instructional experiences to the reading process

Function - how does work?

• Slightly challenging texts
• Targeted teaching

Guided reading is not a stand-alone. Each guided reading lesson should build on the lessons you teach the whole class.

Balancing the Reading Program

Read Aloud

Interactive read aloud...

• ...allows teachers to introduce students to engaging, entertaining and thought-provoking literature
• When students are actively listening to and discussing a text, all of the strategic action for comprehending are in operation
• The teacher is able to mode fluent and expressive reading, demonstrate how readers think, and elicit student discussion throug accountable talk.

Shared Reading

• Whole class, it is often used for focus lessons (mini-lessons).
• Students have a copy of the text or a display on the interactive whiteboard so they can follow along.
• A variety of genres are used.

Independent, Self-Selected Reading

• Creates a love for reading by knowing your students' reading interest.
• Students should have an opportunity each day to read books they select themselves.
