History

  • 1956 - The Buford Dam (lake Lanier) was built
  • 1986- Georgia suffered drought
  • 1989 - The army corps of engineers issued a Report on drinking water consumption proposing a 50% increase in water withdrawal from Lake Lenier

how The water War started

  • 1990 - First lawsuits were filed by Alabama and Florida against Georgia starting the water wars

FLORIDA

THOUGHTS & CONCERNS

Florida

  • Needs water for the Apalachicola Bay
  • Low river flows
  • Wants shrimp
  • Wants the famous oysters

Alabama

  • Afraid about Atlanta's water usage
  • Having to limit water power generation
  • Did not pass the water resources act
  • Uses the water for many reasons
  • For the power plants along the river

Georgia

  • Wants to continue growing
  • Supply big cities with water
  • Atlanta needs 705 million gallons of water daily
  • In 2011 the Governor of Georgia wanted to find another way to get fresh water for Atlanta

They wanted to end the war in July 2012.

1.Went to supreme court on 1/16/18
2.Says Georgia is taking too much water
3.Seems to be siding with Florida

Bad things happening

  • Oysters are dying
  • Lots of restaurants cannot get oysters for their meals
  • People are shutting down their oyster companies in the Apalachicola bay area and leaving

  • Two major rivers: the Apalachicola and the Alabama- coosa
  • One of the most important wild life issues to this day
  • Lots of different courts were involved
