PRESENTATION OUTLINE

THE MOUTH AND THE OESOPHAGUS

BY MARA AND SOPHIA

The Mouth

The mouth plays a key role in the digestive system. Here, you will find your teeth that break-up the food to smaller pieces so that it can travel easier, but it does much more than just begin the digestion. It also increases the surface area and produces a chemical called saliva, which keeps your mouth moist as well as helps the food travel smoothly to its next stop. The mouth, especially the teeth, lips, and tongue, is vital for speech. A group of muscles extend from the bottom part of the mouth to form the tongue.

The Oesophagus

This is also known/named the throat. It receives food that was transported down by the mouth, and carries food to the stomach. It is described as a muscular tube extending to the stomach. The esophagus runs behind the windpipe (trachea) and heart, and in front of the spine.
