BEFORE GOVERNOR

  • taught school
  • worked in oil company
  • Winn Parish assessor
  • served as Winn Parish police jury clerk
  • chairman of La highway commission

GOVERNOR OF LOUISIANA

  • started Homestead Exemption
  • public school system expands
  • advancements in road/bridge construction
  • tick elimination program
  • LSU and medical hospitals were modernized

ALLEN- NOT SO GOOD

  • Long worked through him
  • wasn't fulfilling his ideas, but only Long's
  • ex: helped and gave money to LSU
  • Huey Long was a big fan of LSU, not so much Allen

ALLEN AND THE GREAT DEPRESSION

  • helped local gov. apply for fed. money
  • New Deal Agencies relieved many
  • used NDA until Long criticized FDR

ALLEN'S BIG PLANS RUINED

  • planned on running for US Senate after Long
  • sadly suffered from brain hemorrhage and died
  • he won the vote for Senate, but could not take it
  • ironically, Long's brother took his seat
  • after death, LSU named Allen Hall after him
