- Violence started by members of a secret society in China,
- which prompter the governments of Europe and America to send troops to squash the rebellion
- Some Chinese started joining secret societies
- Started causing chaos
- English and America sent troops to stop the rebellions (approx. 20,000 soldiers)
OPEN DOOR POLICY
- American statement that the government
- Did not want colonies in China, but favored free trade there
- United States wanted to preserve Chinese territorial and administrative entity
- America did not want colonies in China
- Used money they got from China to let Chinese students go to school in US
