  • Japan got territory in Korea and China

BOXER REBELLION

  • Violence started by members of a secret society in China,
  • which prompter the governments of Europe and America to send troops to squash the rebellion
  • Some Chinese started joining secret societies
  • Started causing chaos
  • English and America sent troops to stop the rebellions (approx. 20,000 soldiers)

OPEN DOOR POLICY

  • American statement that the government
  • Did not want colonies in China, but favored free trade there
  • United States wanted to preserve Chinese territorial and administrative entity
  • America did not want colonies in China
  • Used money they got from China to let Chinese students go to school in US
