OPERATION OVERLORD

PLANNING

  • First step of liberation of Western Europe
  • Involved Land, Sea, and Air Force
  • United States, United Kingdom, and Canada
  • Eisenhower was supreme general of mission
  • Plan was to decieve Germany

JUNE 6, 1944

  • Operation was pushed back one day to June 6
  • Invade beaches of Normandy
  • Omaha and Utah= USA
  • Juno= Canada
  • Gold and Sword= Britain

JUNE 6, 1944 CONTINUED

  • 160,000 Allied Troops invaded the 5 beaches
  • Omaha beach was the bloodiest battle
  • 2400 casualties just in Omaha
  • 4000 deaths
  • Almost double the amount either wounded, missing, or captured

GERMAN SIDE

  • Erwin Rommel (desert fox) led the German side
  • Hitler refused to send nearby divisions
  • Reinforcments were called from further away, causing delays
  • Allied air force took out many bridges and roads

AFTER THE LANDING

  • Allied troops move through Normandy
  • Seized port of Cherbourg
  • Allied Troops move further West
