This guy had to "unlearn" how to ride a bike. In some ways, we will be asking you to "unlearn" how to do school this week, especially how to complete a school project. Be prepared for your brain to work in new ways and be "rewired" just a bit this week!

How many of you have a plan for what you will do this week, and what you will accomplish by Friday’s Expo? Some of you are probably excited to get started!

Untitled Slide

Well... I’ve got news for you: Most likely, what you have planned is going to look more like this. Making anything REAL is complicated, and you are going to encounter unexpected challenges along the way.

But, as innovators and problem-solvers, we know that every challenge is really an opportunity to make our ideas better!

As you go through this process, it is important to stay focused on your PROBLEM, not the solution. Before we can begin to think about solutions, we need to make sure we really understand the problem we are trying to solve.

Fall in love with the problem.

unlearning

This isn’t a normal school project- this is a different way of thinking than what we might normally find in school. Usually, we focus a lot of attention on the final product - the big test or assignment or thing that you have to make at the end.

In P3 this year, we want you to learn from the process! It’s true that you are aiming to create something amazing; but, in order to get there you are going to have to commit fully to the process of testing ideas, getting feedback, and improving on your ideas.

Think back to the video. Just as the narrator's brain kept going back to how he had always learned to ride a bike, your brain might want to go back to the way you've learned to do school projects - to get it done, get an A, and move on.

But P3 is not like that.

However, your P3 will not have an end of the road- it will only have iterations (which we'll talk a lot about in the coming days).

Please try to have an open mind.

Please try to have an open mind, especially about solutions to the P3 problem you are trying to solve. You may already have an idea of what you want to create, but please try to open your mind to other possibilities.

Breaking it down,
step by step

We will help you break down the steps of your project.

Here's how to go about your work this week:
- Complete all numbered assignments IN ORDER as much as possible
- Use your folder and checklist to keep track of your assignments.
- You can complete assignments on Google Classroom OR on paper (no need to do both!).

Google Classroom

New categories
Complete the numbered assignments in order, starting with wherever you left off before Experience Week. For some of you, this means finally finishing your Infographic. For others, it means starting with the assignments that were just posted today.

Your P3 journey this week may have a few setbacks, obstacles, and problems.

At any point this week, I should be able to ask you what # you are working on, and you should know!

Google Classroom

New categories
When you see assignments on Google Classroom that are NOT numbered, please do those as soon as you can. These will include the daily reflections, as well as an Expo planning sheet.

Daily Check-Ins

and reflections
The daily check-in and reflections are a chance to check in, see how you are doing, and think about what you will do the next day. You may notice that the reflection we're using this year is different from previous year's.

You can do the daily check-ins on paper (see your folder) or via Google Classroom. Please do one on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Mentors

Keep in touch with yours!
Throughout the week, please be in touch with your mentor. This person was specially chosen to help you on your project, and they are eager to help you. If you would like to do a video call and need help, let Mrs. Shutters know.

schedule

and rooms available
Here is the schedule for the week: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Bn7ceL1ddJqdJWUocesVP7aG58Wn7aZVfQQPSWd...
It also includes a list of which rooms you can work in.

This year, we will start each morning by gathering all together in the library, and discuss the day ahead.

TODAY, half of you will go to the MPR for an Ideation workshop. The other half will go to any of the project work rooms to start on your numbered assignments.

If there isn't a teacher in the room, please work in a different room.

Kid-preneur

As we finish up our Kickoff session, watch the first entrepreneur from this Shark Tank episode from a few weeks ago.
https://abc.com/shows/shark-tank/episode-guide/season-11/11-episode-11

After watching, think about these questions:
- What problem was Sophie trying to solve?
- How did she create her product at first?
- How do you think Sophie's process might be like your process this week?
- How might it be different?

As you watch this, we will be passing out your folders.

folders

We will spend a few minutes discussing what you can find in your folder. If you are viewing this on your own, you can get your folder whenever you are next at school.

checklists

Each folder contains a Checklist to help you keep track of your numbered assignments. This is on a bright green sheet.

Remember, you can do the assignments on the papers found in your folder, OR on Google Classroom.

Untitled Slide

Remember to focus on the problem. One of the first assignments you will work on is Assignment #8 - Refined HMW Question. This assignment asks you to re-write your How Might We Question, given the research and other work you've done since you first wrote it.

This refined How Might We Question should become your focus for the rest of the week.

Remember that you will encounter setbacks along the way. Your teachers are here to support you!

GOOD LUCK!!
