I am focusing on one Irish prison, Midlands Prison in Portlaoise.

FACTS ABOUT THE PRISON

  • It's governor is Mr Ultan Moran.
  • It can hold up to 870 Prisoners.
  • It is a closed prison with medium security for male adults.
  • It's the main prison for counties Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Offaly and Westmeath.
  • It was built in the year 2000.

Visiting Hours
The normal visiting times are Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 12 noon and 2 pm to 4 pm.

Sentanced prisoners are allowed one 30 minute visit per week, and special visits of 15 minutes may be available on request.

Visitors must display photographic identification ( ID, Passport, Drivers license ) on arrival.

The Midlands Prison was built adjacent to Portlaoise Prison, and they share some facilities.
