DENOTATION

  • Denotation-the literal or primary meaning of a word in contrast to the feeling or ideas that the word suggests.
  • Ex) If someone calls you a dog they are pretty much calling you dirty and ugly.

  • It is an additional meaning for a word apart from its original meaning
  • For example....a rose is a flower but it also represents love or home can represent comfort or security
