BRAVE NEW WORLD BY ALDOUS HUXLEY

How do the arts allow for freedom and individuality?

My authoritative source is “Censorship and the Arts”. This article discusses why art and creativity are essential when it comes to freedom. Censoring art in society leads to a lack of freedom of expression and prevents new ideas, emotions, and social advancement. When specific types of art are banned, this “suppression of ideas and of artistic expression leads to conformity, the limiting of diversity of expression to a narrow range of “acceptable” forms, and the stifling of freedom” (5).

Not only does this article discuss how art and freedom are connected, but it contrasts the social norms in Brave New World. In the novel, certain music, literature, and art are prohibited by the government for fear that these notions will interfere with the conditioned thinking if its citizens. In reality, art encourages individualistic mentality and freedom, even though these aspects would drive the close community in Brave New World apart for the better.
