Inquiry Based Learning

Summary of lesson

  • Elementary Class (roughly 15 students) participating in a cardiovascular Endurance activity
  • Following the activity the students are prompted to check their heart rate using a heart rate monitor
  • Teacher asks check for understanding questions regarding the students heart rates
  • Teacher speaks about Healthy Fitness Zone and target heart rate

  • Teacher uses Inquiry-Based Learning
  • Students are prompted to think of various ways to increase heart rate
  • Students use invididual creativity to generate ways to increase their individual heart rate

  • The teacher in the video utilizes heart rate monitor watches and heart rate monitors

Infusing More Technology

  • one way to infuse more technology to this lesson would be to utilize ipads and the app that coincides with the heart rate monitors.
  • This would help students visualize their heart rate and help track/monitor their heart rate
  • it also can help students understand how to achieve their target heart rate

  • In the beginning of the lesson the teacher gives a brief overview of the heart rate monitors. Following this, the teacher starts class with a brief fitness session
  • Following the fitness sessions, the students partake in a badminton lesson

  • some modifications i would do to help bolster this lesson would be to incorporate ipads at the end of the lesson to help students understand how their heart rate works

  • Overall the lesson seem to be effective as the students followed the teacher led directions and completed the many tasks throughout the lesson
  • the students were able to demonstrate an understanding as they were able to decifer their heart rate and calculate which category they fell under
