During the 1930s the southern Great Plains suffered an environmental disaster.farmers had been using new technology such as trackers to clear millions of acres of sod. They didn't realize that that grass held soil in place. So when drought struck in 1931 crops died. Soil dried up and then blew away in the strong prairie windstorms. The storms continued for years. In some areas dust piled in drifts as high as 6 feet.
