It stands for Mutual Assured Destruction.
It is when 2 countries such as the U.S. and the Soviet Union use nuclear weapons to attack each other after one strikes first.

Masstricht Treaty
This began the European Union between 12 countries. It enforced a new common monetary and economic policy.

Marshall Plan
After Europe was destroyed because of war, the U.S sent aid to Western Europe to help rebuild it.

McCarthyism
It was during the 1950s when senator McCarthy was determined to expose all the communist.

Cuban Missile Crisis
JFK told Kruschev to get rid of the nuclear missiles he had in Cuba, but he refused because the U.S. had nuclear weapons stationed in Turkey.

NATO
It stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It was a common defense organization against the Warsaw Pact. It included the U.S, Canada, Great Britain, and Western Europe.

Nuclear Proliferation
Allowing the increase of nuclear weapons.

Perestroika
The restructuring of the economic policy in Russia.

Ping Pong Diplomacy
President Nixon wanted a civil way to meet with Mao Zedong, so he established a ping pong tournament in Beijing.

Prague Spring
It was a time where the ruler of Czechoslovakia wanted to democratize the nation, but it ended up in an invasion by the Soviets.

The Big Three
Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin met for the last time at Yalta to have a discussion on the post war

SALT I
It stood for Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty

It was when the U.S and Soviets agreed to limit the use of arms.

Satellite Countries
They are countries that are formally independent, but are controlled by another country. For example, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, East Germany

Solidarity
It was the first independent labor union in Poland founded in the 1980s.

Sputnik I
Russia sent the first artificial satellite into the Earth's orbit.

Strategic Defense Initiative
It was a program to research a space based system to protect the U.S from attacks.

Treaty of Rome
It created the European Economic Community and a common market between European countries.

Trouble in the Suez
Nasser wanted to nationalize the Suez Canal, but the allies didn't want him too. Britain and France ended up invading Egypt because Nasser nationalized the canal.

Truman Doctrine
Any western European country that rejected communism was granted help from the U.S.

Where almost 200 countries have committed to preserve peace between eachother.

Yalta Conference
Stalin, Roosevelt, and Churchill met at Yalta to divide Germany into 4 sections, press for free election, and to pay repairs to the USSR.
