SPEED OF A PERSON WALKING

Procedure

  • First, I measured and marked 11 meters using a measuring tape and then marked the starting point.
  • After recording the distance on a blank piece of paper, I stood at the starting point and walked from the beginning to the end at a steady pace while timing myself with my Clock app's stopwatch.
  • I repeated the procedure over and over again until I had finished five trials.

Results

  • Trial 1 Speed = 11 m/8.35 s (1.32 m/s)
  • Trial 2 Speed = 11 m/8.06 s (1.36 m/s)
  • Trial 3 Speed = 11 m/8.01 s (1.37 m/s)
  • Trial 4 Speed = 11 m/8.09 s (1.36 m/s)
  • Trial 5 Speed = 11 m/ 7.98 s (1.38 m/s)

Results (cont...)

  • With this information I was able to calculate 1.37 m/s as my average speed throughout the five trials.

Speed of a Bathtub Filling Up

Procedure

  • First, I measured and recorder the depth of the bathtub using a footlong ruler. The water will have to travel 30 centimeters before reaching the top.
  • Next, I started filling up the tub with its faucet and started the stopwatch at the same time.
  • Just like I did before, I repeated this procedure over and over again until I finished five trials.

Results

  • Trial 1 Speed = .003 m/1534 s (.000001956 m/s
  • Trial 2 Speed = .003 m/1539 s (.00000195 m/s)
  • Trial 3 Speed = .003 m/1525 s (.00000197 m/s)
  • Trial 4 Speed = .003 m/1528 s (.00000196 m/s)
  • Trial 5 Speed = .003 m/1529 s (.00000196 m/s)

Results (cont...)

  • Using the data I gathered, I was able to find that 1959 m/s was the average time.

Speed of a Minute Hand on a Clock

Procedure

  • First, I measured the diameter of the clock and multiplied it by pi to get the circuference.
  • Then I divided the circumference (.730005 m) by 3,600 seconds (minutes time seconds of an hour) to find the speed.
  • However, this time instead of doing multiple trials, I only needed to do one since the time will remain the same.

Results

  • Trial 1Speed and Average Speed = .00020278 m/s
