  • Born in 1898 near Zimbabwe
  • He was the president-general of African National Congress.
  • He was involved in politics, defending the African cane growers.
  • Became chief of the Groutville reserve
  • Died July 21, 1967

Why is he important to understand?

  • He was very influential in resistance to disccrrimination
  • Important to the history of South Africa's independence.
  • Similar to Martin Luther King Jr.

WHAT WAS HIS IMPACT ON HISTORY?

  • He was leader of South Africans in non-violent protest.
  • Was kicked out of office as the president general of ANC in 1957
  • Gave Africans more rights/ Fought for South African natives
  • Left a reminder to South Africa to not repeat history.
