ARCHIPELAGO

A GROUPING OR CHAIN OF ISLANDS.

Atoll
A ring-shaped Island by coral reefs building up along the rim of an underwater volcano. The interior is filled with ocean water.

Bay
A body of water partially surrounded by lAnd usually considered smaller than a gulf.

Butte
tall,steep-sided towers of rock that stick out above the land that were formerly part of a messa.

Canyon
A deep narrow valley with steep sides and high walls that were carved out by a river.

Cape
A curved or pointed part of a coastline that sticks out into the water; often resembles a hook shape or comes to a point.

Messa
A flat-topped elevated landform croded out of a plateau by the combination of wind and water.

Channel
A wide waterway that lies between two land masses that generally lie close to each other.

Delta
A sometimes triangular section of land built up at a river’s mouth formed by the deposition of sediment.

Fjord
A long, narrow, steep-sided glacial valley that is now filled with ocean water, created at land’s edge where glaciers feed and break of into the ocean.

Geyser
A jet hot water and steam that erupts from a deep hole in the earth’s crust where volcanism is or has occurred or where a hot spot is present.

Oasis
A place In the desert usually having water in it.

Peninsula
A narrow piece of land that sticks out and is surrounded on water by three sides.

Plateau
A flat, broad and uplifted that is higher the surrounding land. Usually includes a cliff.

Strait
Narrow strip of water that connects two larger bodies of water.

A smaller river or stream that feeds or empties into a larger body of water.
