Slide Notes

Dear Mom or Dad,

Welcome to student led conference! During this time, we will be discussing my strengths and weaknesses academically and my strengths and weaknesses in learning skills. We will be discussing three different academic subjects in which I will tell how well I did in the subject or how I could’ve improved in a subject and why I had performed poorly. Furthermore, we will deliberate three different learning skills in which I may have done well in showcasing to my teachers or peers or on learning skills in which I may have to improve on.

Thank You For Coming!

Before I begin I would like to acknowledge that you spent your time to come here and would like to thank you for coming here.

Responsibility

My first learning skill
My first learning skill that I will be discussing is responsibility. According to merriam-webster.com, the definition of responsibility is, “ -having the job or duty of dealing with or taking care of something or someone. : able to be trusted to do what is right or to do the things that are expected or required. : involving important duties, decisions, etc., that you are trusted to do,” I feel that I am quite a responsible person and there are numerous reasons why I think so. Firstly, I typically submit my work on agreed upon deadlines. This was demonstrated in many projects I have completed such as my geography world tour, my math infographic assignment, my podcasts, and more. I always keep my belongings in safe possession which is demonstrated through the fact that I have never lost any of my possessions. I consider myself as a responsible person in general.

Initiative

My second learning skill
Moving on, for my second learning skill, I chose initiative. I find initiative something I am not excellent at, but rather, O.K at. Initiative means that I take my own action and I have the ability to assess and initiate things independently. I might ask for help from my teachers or peers meaning that I do not operate independently. An example of initiative is; instead of asking my teacher for help or anything, I try to find out the answer myself until I’m sure that I am stumped or I am fine with my answer. I think that I am not excellent at this ability, judging from the fact that I received a “Good” in my previous report card. I usually do ask my teacher for help and sometimes, I ask for help even before I attempt the problem myself. This is what I think of my initiative ability.

Collaboration

My third and final learning skill I will be discussing for today
Finally, for my last learning skill, I selected collaboration. For this learning skill, I have received an “E” in a previous report card but, I think I am not that good collaboration, or I could be better. Typically, I do work with my peers for group projects but I tend to work independently which is more easier for me. I don’t receive distractions when I work independently but I do when collaborating. I find that collaborating is difficult sometimes as there have been instances when I had to do more work than them. Collaboration is definitely not my best skill but but overall, I think I could be a bit better by actually meeting my peer in a library or some other place to work with them. I have started making an improvement though. Last year, for my conflict and change project, I worked daily, during the evening, at my local library with my group partners to finish the project.

Language, Math, and Science

Moving on, let's discuss these three subjects!
So that caps it off, my learning skills are good, but I feel I could do better and I could improve in some skills. So moving on, let us talk about my marks in these three subjects - literacy, math, and science.

Literacy - High Sample

My English marks
For English/literacy, I will be talking about my mark for my Instagram assignment. For this assignment, I received a “4” on the writing aspect, a “4” on the visual art aspect, and a “4-” on the media literacy aspect. I find this a very good mark in my opinion and I wouldn’t have asked for more but, how did I get this mark? Well, I think I used a wide vocabulary and made a good paragraph for my writing, I think I inputted a good picture for my photography mark. I did decent in all categories in my opinion. To get this mark, I, as stated before, was able to write a clear, detailed, organized and effective paragraph. I created a good piece of photography and I also made a pretty good media text. This is why I think I got my mark. To continue getting this mark, I think I have to follow whatever the rubric and the project requirements are, I have to take feedback from peers and teachers, and I have to use synonyms and a wide variety of vocabulary. This is what I think I should do to continue receiving these marks.

Literacy - Low Sample

My lower English marks
So moving on to a mark I had received a low sample on my podcast. I received a “4-” which could’ve easily been a “4” or “4+”. I think that I hadn’t received the optimal mark because I may have stuttered on a few of the words I was reading. I could improve by making no mistakes during the reading process in general. I think that I got this mark because I didn’t make any mistakes otherwise but the occasional stuttering might’ve brought down my mark. I think that, to get a better mark, I should just keep on recording until I am fine with the way my podcast shaped out.

Mathematics - High Sample

My Math marks
For mathematics, I will be talking about my mark for my Number Sense and Numeration Test. For this assignment, I received a 100% mark but, how did I get this mark? Well, I made sure to check my work for any mistakes, I tried my best, and I prepared well previously for it. To receive the same mark, I think I should use the same strategy I used to receive the 100%. I have to do whatever homework is required to finish, I have to review, I have to check over my test answers, I have to try my best, and I also may have to seek assistance from peers, parents, or teachers.

Mathematics - Low Sample

My lower math marks
So moving on, I will tell you the mark I received a low sample on, my multiplication and division quiz. I received a 72% which could have easily been a 100%. I think I hadn’t received the best mark because I didn’t have enough time to finish all the questions. I could improve by being faster on the next, upcoming, math test. I could improve by being much faster while writing a quiz or test. I think that, to get a better mark next time, I should make sure I go fast, leave the hard or time consuming questions for later, and just finish all the questions and then come back to the harder questions.

Science - High Sample

My Science marks
For Science, I will be talking about the mark I had received for my first science quiz. For the quiz, I had received a 90% mark but, how did I get this mark? Well, I tried my best, made sure to check for mistakes, and I prepared for the quiz. To receive the same mark, I think I should check my answers, prepare for the quiz, and make sure to try my best. I think that I did well on everything in general except for these two questions in which I couldn’t differentiate the medium-power and lower-power objective lens. This caused my mark to go down, but otherwise, I think I did quite well and I should use the same strategy to get this mark for future quizzes and tests.

Science - Low Sample

My lower science marks
So moving on, I will tell you the mark I received a low sample on, my science unit test. For the test, I received a 92% mark but I feel that I could have done better - I had gotten 3 questions incorrect out of the total 39 questions. The reason I think I got the three questions wrong is because I didn’t get enough practice, as I didn’t know the answers to some of the questions. I can improve on getting all questions right by finding out the definitions and any information necessary of all the material that is likely going to be on the quiz or test. So I should prepare and possibly create a study guide, work with a peer, and make sure I am 100% ready for the quiz or test. I should also continue to prepare day by day to ensure that I get a decent mark.

Thank You!
