GALILEO'S MAJOR ACHIVEMENT: THE TELESCOPE

  • Not his first or only invention
  • Europe made the first telescope (magnified 3x)
  • Galileo,s magnified 20x
  • The telescope allowed him to see many new things in space such as the surface of the moon, moons of Jupiter, sunspots and more.
  • Galileo never moved from Pisa, Italy and he had a job at the university so he had a place to do his research then get to making it right away.

WHY IS THE TELESCOPE AN EXAMPLE OF HUMANISIM

  • This is a major example of humanism because Galileo was the first person to go against the church's beliefs in saying there isn't a heaven above us.
  • Even when the church didn't want him to make his findings know, with risk of major discipline, he made a book about them.
  • He eventually was punished by the church and put under house arrest. He could not have visitors or publish anymore books, he ignored both.

GALILEO: QOUTE OF HUMANISM

  • "I do not feel obliged to believe that the same god who has endowed us with sense, reason and intellect has intended us to forgo their use."
  • This is an example of humanism because the church told him not to release his findings and he did anyway and I feel this quote is almost a response to what the church told him to do.

MODERN DAYS: THE TELESCOPE

  • The telescope has been modified and made better so we can observe even more things in space further pushing science and our understanding of our universe thanks to Galileo.
