Slide Notes

Congratulations for taking the step in such challenging times. I believe it doesn't do a lot of good to stay put in hard times, keep trying to progress makes for better days...

You've put yourself out there, your risking being vulnerable, your going form comfortable to uncomfortable or at least thinking about it... You don't be ready for admin - you become ready as you take on new roles - being brave to jump at these roles is amazing...

It's great to see such a group - our school had more than ever - you're also an exceptional group - that's what we need to move forward - i think it is a sign that our culture in the division is improving, it takes time, but seeing groups like this and sheer volume of applicants is a good sign. Not a lot of people were jumping at this type of program a few years ago...

I'm not a erlc professional and Dan is hella cheap so you aint getting one. We have this gift of time (not after school) to share and come together, that's pretty amazing considering the last few years.

Be vulnerable - I'll ramble on about all things admin related not just climate and culture... sorry

Building Positive Climate & Culture
Congratulations for taking the step in such challenging times. I believe it doesn't do a lot of good to stay put in hard times, keep trying to progress makes for better days...

Coffee Chat

Share seating plan - discuss rules

-No school talk
-Possible Prompts:

what is a trait of someone in your family you admire?

what is something someone would guess of you?

what was your favorite thing to do as a kid?

Anyone wanna share anything they may have learned? (double check the other person is comfortable with it)

Share why I do this for PD day mornings...

Great way to put things on the table before meetings or a day of professional development

It's fun and an easy way to start the day - sets the tone

Bigger picture here - I did this because I get that it's a small act, but really feel like you will get what you want out of this program. If you make relationships, learn and share with one another, come together as a team, you will gain a lot from the program. If you learn a little bit from

Agenda

  • Relationship Reminder
  • Climate
  • Break 2:00-2:15pm
  • Culture
  • Done at 3:30 or earlier
Washrooms - leave whenever

I'm not going to ask you to do icebreakers or any public speaking today but do want you to be engaged and participate fully and presently - it's rare time to be together

I'll respect your time...

"Trust is the glue of life. It's the most essential ingredient in effective communication. It's the foundational principle that holds all relationships."

=Stephen Covey

trust....relationships... real growth.... working on right hand.... emotional bank accounts ... 7 habits work .... truly getting that 3:1 ish ratio is really key - 3 authentic positive connections or deposits in their emotional bank account are needed - without this it's just toxic - real relationships are needed to do anything (just like teaching, if they don't trust you they won't learn from you) - if you really know your team, then when you have those hard conversations you are supporting their growth, not criticizing them

what great principals do differently

I love a lot of his stuff, some doesn't make any sense to me...

In the book they discuss how one of the best ways to understand the concept of culture is to contrast it with the concept of school climate.

A climate is both a window into it's culture and a learned response that the culture teaches new members...

Climate is fast ... culture is slow

more is caught than taught

10/10 sign - they will remember the 1/10 time...

More is caught than taught...
If the leader sneezes five people catch a cold - if you are moping around it sets the tone - if you are stressing out - if you are calm...

Relationship with yourself...Scarcity book - uofp research .... it won't be perfect all the time....If things do suck and that's how you feel it's time to look at yourself and what things you are doing for yourself - then model the change, add habits to your life that will get you being how you want to be.... opening the school - took back my mornings - You have to be optimistic to move climate and culture forward (you can't be the cynical angry person, you are responsible for this next group of teachers you need to show them hope imperative - empower them with agency - to show them that growth and good is possible and that being in education is a special and amazing career, an honour to be spending days with peoples kids)

I tell people all the time that my job is easier than teaching and I really believe that, there are harder moments but in general, teaching is damn hard - I know, I want to make it better for teachers every way I can -

Lead follower... video of Dan Stephen at Folk fest last year...

climate killers

Inquiry strategy is to show an exemplar and a non-exemplar....

Climate killers....

share mine - being reactive...

Anyone have any? haha, no names or specifics....

what are your thoughts, connections to leadership?

shan share her thoughts (admin connection)

48 hours till i see you again.. fake it till to you make it...

You have the single most important voice for what others will think of your school...

Positivity / Optimism / Calmness are key...

Think of a time when you've seen leadership that inspired you or had a positive influence on you, changed the way you saw things...
reflect on your own (write it, think it whatever, just give yourself sometime to think... something we haven't done a lot of lately...)

new initiatives

When starting new initiatives take your best teachers and do it with them first. Runt it perfectly (sprints example). Then influence grows - a sub culture of effective teachers develops - this is where people will go.

praise risk taking

Steam Academy
360 classrooms
New Teaching Methods - ed camps
wrestling, dnd, esports

think outside the box - we too often just do it how it was done because the constraints make it easier to run forward...

I just say yes to everything I can when it's new initiaves, what can i do to help knock down some barriers? Like why not... be smart about it.... but it frees people up a bit!

Runners/Joggers/Walkers...

Your runners and joggers are gonna screw up the most... that's ok!

meetings

If they are supposed to be/or can be fun... make them fun!

-different location
-food
-activity breaks
-music
-summary notes example

Create the environment you want to work in....

If they are supposed to be serious - take them serious

If staff dread mtgs or the culture of the school is to dread meetings the will convince themselves they are a waste of time.

thank people wanting to have hard conversations

Brene Brown Dare to lead - crucial conversations -

Clear is kind. Unclear is unkind.

Thank people - you want a culture where people say how they feel in an appropriate way- it's vital - if people don't it will ripple into everything and become toxic.

Explain the elephant in the room when it's there... the first seven seconds is the hardest part...

I have some personal beliefs about the importance of being an excellent teacher before getting to admin... I'm not sure they are right and they may actually be a bid damaging... but i know some things carry over... When I teach, I never thought the kids were bad that day and it was there fault the lesson didn't go well, it always felt to me like I could reflect and find the things i could of done better to set up that lesson, support the students or make it more engaging.... When you have issues with staff it's the same thing, go to yourself first - could of you been clearer with the outcome you were hoping for "paint done for me' - could of you perpared people better- Assume Positive Intent in people, it's a much better way to lead and live!

stick together

Climate is around us... culture is part of us

Teachers may criticize their school or what it does, but they wouldn't tolerate outsiders criticizing their school... (kevin ma example)

Visit other more effective schools...

There are some really great things schools do to create positive climate.

The CASE method....

I steal every good idea, I'm smart enough to know not to reinvent the wheel...

Draw your dream school.... 5 minutes... specific climate examples... share with the group....

final thoughts

Climate is fast - you know it - steal it

Culture takes a long time but little steps make big differences I used to read this and believe it but now I am living it and see it clearer than ever.

Piece of advice for getting into admin... currency - you've all been gaining a currency for the volunteer work, leadership roles, etc... learn how to articulate that properly - if you can't, those skills won't count for anything (when trying to get into admin)

thanks again - you are wanting to take a challenge you are modelling lifelong learning! Great job!!

questions - thoughts - time to share....
