4th phase of ignition discernment

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

PHASE FOUR: PONDER THE DREAMS

WHAT IS PHASE FOUR?

  • After dreaming the dreams in phase 3 we must think and pray about those dreams
  • Our prayers and thoughts generate feelings of consolation and desolation in us
  • Phase 4 is when we weigh the different feelings and try to understand what God is telling us through consolations and desolation

IGNATIUS AND PHASE FOUR

  • Ignatius had phase four while injured
  • While in bed he would dream of chivalry and women and would feel happy for a little bit but once those thoughts had left him he would feel dry and empty
  • Ignatius would then dream of being a follower of Christ like the saints and be a knight for Christ and this would give him happiness even after the dream had left him.
  • Ignatius had to use these feelings to find what God was trying to tell him

WEIGHING CONSOLATION AND DESOLATION

  • We must focus on how we feel when we dream about our decisions because these feelings are the language of God
  • When we feel desolation it may be a sign that we should try to stay away from that dream since in the end it will cause us pain and suffering
  • A feeling of consolations is an encouragement by God saying that we are on the right path and should continue with that dream

CONSOLATION V. DESOLATION

  • Consolation: peace, inflamed energy, want to share your dream with the world
  • Desolation: disquiet, deflatedness, wanting to keep your dreams secret and not tell others about it
