NATURALLY

• When muddy water flows through grass or weeds on its way to a stream it gets filtered.
• Plants and bottom-dwelling animals take it, filter it and put it back out.
• When water goes through the uppermost layer of sediment at the bottom of a stream or lake, it gets filtered.
• When water goes through soil it's filtered by the dirt pulling the bacteria or chemicals out.

BY HUMANS

• People put small amounts of disinfectants in water to reduce the risk of recontamination.
• When water goes through a treatment plant, they put chlorine in it to kill microorganisms.

BY HUMANS CONT.

• When water goes through the Reverse Osmosis process, inorganic solids are removed from the water.
