Infinitive

  • to + base verb
  • to play
  • to study
  • to eat

Why do we use them?

WE WANT TO USE A VERB AS A NOUN!

Example

  • I like tennis.
  • Do you play or watch?
  • I like play tennis. (???)
  • I like watch tennis. (???)
"I like play tennis" and "I like watch tennis" are incorrect because you cannot have two verbs in a row. How can we correct these sentences?

Change the verb to a noun.

  • I like to play tennis.
  • I like playing tennis.
  • I like to watch tennis.
  • I like watching tennis.

Rule #1: Look at the verb.

  • Some are followed by gerunds.
  • Some are followed by infinitives.
  • Some are followed by both.
