A. Describe key events that forced Emperor Xuantong to abdicate? Revolutionary and nationalist uprisings, due to the Chinese political vacuum in China.
B. Who was Dr. Sun Yatsen and what were his contributions to the Republic? He lead the revolution against the dynasty, and helped form the Republic.
C. How stable was the Chinese government after the revolution of 1911? Not very. It soon began disintegrating into political anarchy.
D. What treaties established a network of foreign control over China in the 19th century? The Unequal Treaties were established.
A. Why did China want the U.S. to support a termination of the treaty system? They wanted to copy the policial and economic systems in Europe and the United States.
B. Explain why Japan was interested in Chinese land in the early part of the 20th century? Because they wanted to disintegrate the treaty.
C. What were the key ideas that were behind the May Fourth Movement? (What did these students and intellectuals support?) The intellectuals were against Japanese intervention because they galvanized the country of China.
D. What political party was organized in 1921? How did this group view the Soviet Union? (In Shanghai) The Chinese Communist Party was established in 1921, and they agreed with the Soviet Union’s beliefs.
A. Why did Jiang Jieshi turn against his former communist allies? To bring the alliance between the CCP and Guomidang to an end
B. Please describe what problems the new national government faced in the 1930s? The nationalist government actually only controlled a part of China, the communist revolution was still a threat, and the Guomindang faced increasing Japanese aggression.
C. How did Mao Zedong rely on the peasantry in different regions in China? (Look at the “Report On An Investigation of the Peasant Movement In Hunan”) He required peasants in different areas of China to both help propel the government and support the economy.
D. Why was this relationship between the Chinese Communist Party and the peasants so important to Mao’s cause? The peasents felt like theu should join the communist party.
