The Colony

• Georgia was named after King George the II
• Georgia was founded by James Oglethorpe and other colonists in 1732
• Georgia is part of the Southern Colonies

James Oglethorpe

• James Oglethorpe was born in Surrey, the son of Theophilus Oglethorpe
• He did not believe in slavery and he was born on December 22,1696.

Religion

• Georgia believed in religious freedom; they believed in angels
• One of the religions was Baptists. They believed that if you believed in God you will go to heaven
• People in Georgia worshipped angels and God.

Geography

• Georgia has hilly Coastal Plains and lots of forests.
• Georgia has a warm climate throughout the year which makes it great for growing crops.

Economy

• The people made money by farming, as blacksmiths, doing laundry, growing rice,tobacco,sugar, cotton,corn and livestock.

Unique Qualities

• Our colony is warm, has lots of natural resources, and major towns!
• Our original name was the Province of Georgia
• We protected the South Carolina colony
• Georgia was founded 50 years later than any other of the 12 colonies.
