During the colonial times

THE MOLASSES ACT

  • The molasses act was a high tax on importing molasses
  • It was passed in 1733

THE SUGAR ACT

  • This act replaced the molasses act
  • It was not only a tax on molasses but sugar and wine too
  • It was passed in 1764

THE STAMP ACT

  • This act forced colonists to pay for a stamp to put on all paper products
  • If they thought you didn't pay the tax, soldiers were allowed to search your house for documents.
  • It was passed in 1765

THE QUARTERING ACT

  • This act forced colonists to house British soldiers
  • British parliament knew they needed to have an army in America and had no place to put them so they lived in the colonists' homes
  • This act was also passed in 1765

THE TEA ACT

  • The tea act was a tax on tea
  • It was passed because the British tea company was doing bad
  • They also needed money for the war against France
  • It was passed in 1773

THE BOSTON TEA PARTY

  • This was a result of the tea act
  • Some colonists dressed up as Indians and dumped £15,000 worth of tea into Boston Harbor

THE INTOLERABLE ACTS

  • The first was that Boston Harbor was closed until the tea was paid off
  • The second took away the right of self government
  • The third was that if a British official needed trial in the colonies they could go to Britain to do that
  • The fourth was another quartering act
  • The fifth was not a punishment and it gave Roman Catholics religious freedom and protection
  • It was passed in 1774
