A Wave of Exploration

  • The wave of exploration that began with Columbus' voyage in 1492 didn't take long to reach the land that is now Texas.
  • Spain's conquest of the Americas began on a series of islands in what is now the Caribbean sea.
  • When 1519 came around, exploration has turned to Mexico.

Alonzo Alvarez de Pineda part 1

  • An expedition led by Alonzo Alvarez de Pineda in 1519, sailed from Florida-Mexico.
  • The map that Alonzo used, which is still here today, shows a long curving coastline that is still seeable.
  • The map that Pineda used is the first showing the land Texas. However, there is know evidence that the expeditoin came to texas

Alonzo Alvarez de Pineda part 2

  • It's likely that Pineda stopped along the coast on the Expedition.
  • A later group of explorers get credit for being first from the old world to plant feet on the coast of Texas.

Cabez de Vaca

  • Some 80 men wrecked on a barrier island - perhaps present day Gavelston.
  • The group of 80 men included a Moorish slaved man named Estevanico, the first African to enter what is now Texas.

  • In 1536, Cabez de Vaca and a handful of companions traveled across North america to a Spanish outpost.

Luis Moscoso de Alvarado

  • An exploration led by Luis Moscoso de Alvarado , survivors of another failed mission to Florida, entered east Texas in the summer of 1542
  • The explores led by Luis Moscoso encountered the Caddo Indians, and perhaps reached the Guadalupe River.
  • Many questions about the expedition remain about the route they travled in the state

La salle

  • The French explorer Sieur de La Salle, set out for the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico.
  • Even though La Salle had set out for the northern coast, it had already been claimed by Spain.
  • La Salle's expedition strayed far from its original course, and landed at present day Matagorda bay, Texas.
