It's Only The Mocks

... Is that what you think?

Is This You

  • Think that you aren't too bothered, as it's not the real thing yet?
  • Does a little bit of you think they don't matter?
  • Are others not getting worked up by them?

"Self Analysis"
The one key reason for mocks is to analyse your performance

Performance Spots

  • Spot 1: Mastery (Key concepts, topics, subjects)
  • Spot 2: Marks earned & lost - & why?
  • Spot 3: Identify areas for improvement.

Motivation & Procrastination

“the further away an event is, the less impact it has on people’s decisions.”

Summer exams feel like a lifetime away, but your teachers will tell you that starting to working hard for them after Easter is too late.

Are they right????

Comprehensive reviews on memory have revealed some useful advice ...

Practise effective revision strategies - don't just highlight & re-read, give yourself time to develop effective memory strategies:

Forgetting is an important part of remembering!

Do...keep revisiting material after increasing intervals

Do...switch topics/subjects

Your memory works best when it is forced to mix up different subjects and topics within subjects
This will feel more difficult and it takes careful planning but it will be more effective.

“elaborative interrogation”

Essentially ask your self "why" ???

'the hungry man got in his car'

  • Group 1 read the sentence.
  • Group 2 were told why.
  • Group 3 were asked to think why he might have done this

Do Keep Trying ...

Improve Your Knowledge
Researchers found that students who did a practice test after a period of revision did better on the final exam than those students who didn’t do the mock exam and had just spent the whole time revising.

Don't see an exam as a potentially threat or as some sort of judgement on your ability.
See your mock exams as a handy way of improving your knowledge and memory.

Pressure can do funny things to students.

For some, it can lead to nerves, anxiety, frustration and sloppy mistakes, culminating in a poor performance.
For others, pressure allows them to concentrate more, work harder and perform better.
It takes time and practice to perform well under pressure.

Doing mocks early enough in the year gives you time before the real thing to target areas that need improvement.

Mock exam results can identify how best to spend the coming months for students.

Mock exams, if framed right, can be incredibly beneficial.

They can help you to start revising early, to practise effective revision strategies, to improve their knowledge, to familiarise themselves with pressure, and act as a guide moving forward.

EXPECTATIONS

We expect all members of the Sixth Form to conduct themselves courteously and respectfully towards one another

We expect all Sixth Formers and Staff to care actively for other members of our community and to contribute to their well being and success.

Where Sixth Formers fall short of our high expectations, they will be challenged by their teachers to change and grow.

We are firm in the belief that every young person’s mind and character can and will flourish and grow and that mistakes are a necessary part of this process.

Given this, poor choices regarding personal conduct will be met with clear and specific advice about how one should improve and mature.

Independent or self-directed learning is an important skill, whether you plan to continue your studies after school or college or enter the world of work...

Independent learning is when an individual is able to think, act and pursue their own studies autonomously, without the same levels of support you receive from a teacher at school.

In other words, you need to be able to do your own research instead of expecting a teacher to give you all the background material you might need.

To become a good independent learner you need to be:

Motivated

Resilient, to overcome challenges

An excellent time manager

What do we mean by Independent Learning?
@
BlueCoat?

BC is committed to the wider concept of developing independence: independent thinking, learning and coping.
