PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Samaritan Woman

3/23 Sermon

Encountering Christ

  • The gospel writers will often emphasize a unique encounter with God.
  • Some come away from meeting the Lord happy and some go away sad. Some receive blessings beyond anything they had hoped for, and some others also come away completely changed after encountering Christ

Encountering Christ

  • In the example of the Gentile woman who asked Jesus to heal her demon possessed daughter, she proves her faith
  • 'But He answered and said, “It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.” And she said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from thier masters’ table.”'

Encountering Christ

  • When the woman with the flow of blood encountered Christ, she believed that if she could just touch the hem of His garment, she would be healed and the gospel says, "'And He said to her, “Daughter, be of good cheer; your faith has made you well. Go in peace.”'

Encountering Christ

  • For example, the rich young ruler who asked Christ what he needed to do to inherit eternal life, left Jesus feeling sad because he could not give up his worldly wealth

Encountering Christ

  • What happened to the Samaritan Woman after encountering Christ
  • let's explore together

Context

  • Samaria was right in the middle between Galilee in the north and Judea and Jerusalem in the south. The shortest way for Jewish people to go north from Jerusalem or south from Galilee was to travel through Samaria.

Context

Samaria

  • After the reign of King Solomon the Kingdom of Israel was divided into two: The Northern Kingdom (Israel) and the Southern Kingdom (Judah)

Samaria

  • After Assyria conquered Israel and took most of its people into captivity, the invaders then brought in Gentiles to resettle the land. The Israelites then began to intermarry with the Gentiles and also worship thier idols while still worshipping the God of Israel. The result of these mixed marriages resulted in the Samaritans.

Samaria

  • Meanwhile the Southern Kingdom of Judah considered themselves full-blooded (“pure”) and worshipped only the One God and they detested the mixed marriages and worship of the northern samaritans. This is why there was so much animosity between Jews and Samaritans.

Samaria

  • Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.' John 4:9

1. Repentance

  • She came to draw water at the 6th hour (12:00 noon) Why was she coming to draw water at noon?

1. Repentance

  • She came to draw water at the 6th hour (12:00 noon) Why was she coming to draw water at noon?

1. Repentance

  • In Genesis 24:11, when Abraham's servant goes to find a wife for Isaac, it says, "And he made his camels kneel down outside the city by a well of water at evening time, the time when women go out to draw water."
  • Because she wanted to avoid people - avoid talking or seeing anyone (Shame? Embarrassed? Guilt?)

1. Repentance of St. Photini

  • After her encounter with Christ she leaves Him changed - she no longer avoids people but does just the opposite - she proclaims to the men in the city what happened to her
  • 'And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “He told me all that I ever did.” ' John 4:39

2. Confession of St. Photini

  • Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’ for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly.”' John 4:16-18

2. Confession of St. Photini

  • 2 - she confessed!
  • It was this honesty that led Jesus to reveal Himself to her as the Messiah
  • The importance and power of confession

2. Confession of St. Photini

  • The importance and power of confession

2. Confession of St. Photini

  • In her confession, she humbly acknowledged the truth about her brokenness; she did not react defensively or make excuses. She did not end the conversation or run away in shame.
  • Instead, she was open to the healing of her soul, to the possibility of a new and restored life through the mercy of the Lord. Again, it was this honesty that led Jesus to reveal Himself to her as the Messiah

3. Repentance of St. Photini

  • “She left her waterpot”
  • What does it mean that she left her waterpot?
  • "The woman then left her waterpot, went her way into the city, and said to the men, “Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?” Then they went out of the city and came to Him.' John 4:28-30

3. Repentance of St. Photini

  • What does her waterpot symbolize? Her past, her shame, her insecurity, her burden? She left it all behind and became an evangelist to her neighbors, many of whom also became believers.

3. Repentance of St. Photini

  • Following Jesus always involves leaving your old life behind. The disciples left their nets, Matthew left his tax collector’s booth, Zacchaeus left his fortune. And the Samaritan woman left her waterpot.
  • What is God asking you to leave behind so you can embrace your new identity in Christ?

As we encounter Christ today and as we continue to journey through this blessed and holy Lent, I ask the Lord that He give us the spirit of repentance to change our mind, to increase our fasting and prayer, and to leave behind our old ways and let us all become like the Great Martyr Photini by embracing enthusiastically the new life
