Elements are grouped on the periodic table according to how they LOOK and ACT

Rows are called periods on the periodic table and tell us the number of electrons shells that any element in that row has

There are 18 groups/families on the PT. Elements in these groups have common chemical/physical properties

States of Matter

All 3 states of matter are represented on the periodic table

Most of the elements are solid at room temperature

the rest exist in a liquid or gas state

The majority of the elements are metals

On the PT there is a stairstep/zigzag line beginning at Boron. This stairstep separates metals from nonmetals. Metals are on the left and nonmetals are on the right.

Elements get more stable moving from left to right across the periodic table. The elements on the far left are very unstable and the noble gases are very stable.

  • Conductors of heat and electricity
