OVERVIEW

  • Russia is a Federal Semi-Presidential Constitutional Republic
  • It has a Bicameral Legislation
  • It has a mixed command and market economy

HEAD OF STATE/HEAD OF GOVT.

  • President Vladimir Putin is the Head of State
  • Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev is the Head of Government

STATE DUMA

  • Parties Represented: United Russia(340), Communist Russia(42), and Liberal Democratic Party(40)
  • The Duma, along with popular election, help decide the Russian president
  • Lower House

FEDERATION COUNCIL

  • Upper house
  • 170 seats; 2 members in each of the 83 federal administrative units

JUDICIAL BRANCH

  • Judges are appointed by the Federation Council, and serve for life.
  • The Judiciary of Russia interprets and applies the law of Russia. It is defined under the constitution of Russia.

EXECUTIVE BRANCH

  • According to the Constitution of Russia, the President of Russia is head of state, and of a multi-party system.

RUSSIAN REVOLUTION 1917

  • The working class abolished the monarchy under Lenin and the Bolsheviks, and created the Soviet Union under a communist government.
