FDR Memorial
A quote FDR wrote is "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself". I think this quote means if you don't have anything to be afraid of then you won't be afraid. The significance of the four rooms is that each one represents one term of which FDR was elected president of the U.S.

VIETNAM WALL

  • The Vietnam Wall has 58,256 names on it.
  • I think the reflective quality was chosen so that you can respect them and put yourself in their shoes.
  • The statue was later added to the memorial because it represented the healing of the losses and and the nation.

CAPITOL

  • The Capitol is the meeting place of the U. S. Congress and the legislature of the U. S. Federal Government.

WASHINGTON MONUMENT

  • The Washington Monument's height is significant because no other building in D. C. is allowed to be taller.

  • In 1793 Washington is re-elected to presidency.
  • Washington signs treaty of San Lorenzo in 1795.

JEFFERSON MEMORIAL
Excerpts from the Declaration of Independence are included in the Jefferson Memorial because Jefferson believed very mightily in what the Declaration of Independence stated. The material for the statue could not be bronze because of rations but they later took down that statue and added a bronze one.

JEFFERSON MEMORIAL

  • In 1743 Jefferson was born.
  • In 1803 Jefferson oversaw the Louisiana Purchase.
  • On July 4, 1826, Jefferson died on the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

WORLD WAR II MEMORIAL
The cartoon drawing on the memorial is called Kilroy. It is a cartoon drawing of a man looking over a wall, that was a popular piece of graffiti drawn by American troops. The cartoon's significance was that it came to be a sign that the American soldiers had gone through that area.

WORLD WAR II MEMORIAL
The message on the Freedom Wall, "Here we mark the price of freedom" means that in order to gain freedom to pay was all the soldiers that died and that the memorial is marking their importance. Another thing on the Freedom Wall is the 4048 gold stars. Each one represents one hundred soldiers that died in WWII.

THE KOREAN MEMORIAL
The phrase "Freedom is not free" means the right to be free comes with a cost and people die fighting for it. The purpose of the 19 statues is to tell that race and ethnicity don't tell the person you are. The Mural Wall is a 164 foot wall that consists of approximately 2400 images depicting the the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Gaurd, and Air Force.

ARCHIVES

  • The Supreme Court got it's building in 1935. It was previously in the Capitol.
  • The Supreme Court is different from other courts because it is the final court that you go to for trial.

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. MEMORIAL
The theme of hope is represented in the sculpture of the memorial because when Martin Luther King Jr. gave his I Have A Dream speech he made it clear that he wanted to give African Americans freedom and he was their symbol of freedom. So his sculpture represents that the hope will live on.

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. MEMORIAL
The significance of the street address is that in 1964 was the year that Martin Luther King Jr. won the Nobel Peace Prize. The quote "Out of a mountain of despair, a stone of hope" means that segregation is the mountain of despair and the stone of hope is the people trying to get civil rights for African Americans.
