Smart Goals

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Attainable
  • Relevant
  • Time-bound

Goals should contain...

  • A date to measure the achieved goal
  • What behavior the student will demonstrate
  • What level, degree, or condition the student will perform

Goals

  • A properly written goal should relate directly to the needs from their present level of academic performance and functional performance
  • Must identify a learning gain that is both challenging and achievable in one year
  • Goals should be divided into short term objectives or benchmarks

Short term objectives & Benchmarks

  • Short term objectives are intermediate steps for a goal
  • Benchmarks are major milestones for a goal
  • These both describe meaningful intermediate and measurable outcomes between the student's current performance level and the annual goal

  • Short term goals and objectives should be written so students, parents, and educators can monitor progress throughout the year

Future educator

  • Understanding how to properly write an IEP goal is highly important because this is something i will be doing a lot of later on. This is also relevant to our current IEP project in which I am getting practice writing goals for. Having a clear and precise goal is important because it promotes positive outcomes for students with disabilities. It also provides a clear way for me to monitor student progress.
