Objectives

What is a Haiku?

A Haiku is...

  • A Japanese poem aka as a hokku
  • Similar to a tanka
  • Themes of love to nature

Haiku became popular as tanka poems in Japan during the 9th and 12th centuries. Initially, it was called “hokku." Basho, Buson and Issa were the first three masters of the haiku genre.

Features of a Haiku

  • Three Lines
  • Five syllables in the first line, seven in the second, and five in the last
  • 17 syllables in total

Features of a Haiku

  • Does not need to rhyme
  • Has a seasonal reference
  • Usually about nature or a natural phenomenon.

Function of a Haiku

Haikus are short poems.
Readers could identify with haikus easily.
For example, seasons and animals are recognizable topics to the readers.
