TYPES OF TUNDRA

  • Arctic Tundra- Found far north; mostly frozen; stark landscape
  • Antarctic Tundra- Found in Antartica; no vegetation; Ice fields || some rocky soil
  • Alphine Tundra- No trees due to climate; mountains worldwide

CLIMATE

  • Rarely any rain (1-3cm/mo. | 12/36cm/yr)
  • Freezing cold; spongy soil
  • Winter: -25•C/-13•F Summer: 1•C/33.8•F

THREATS TO TUNDRAS

  • Melting of the permafrost due to global warming
  • Air Pollution caused mankind

NATURAL RESOURCES

  • Metals (copper, iron, etc)
  • Natural gas
  • Oil

LEMMIMG ADAPTATIONS

  • Coats turn brown during summer and white during winter for camouflage
  • Very thick fur to keep warm
  • Occasionally migrate to find food.

ERMINE ADAPTATIONS

  • Coats change color for camouflage
  • Slender body allows to enter underground
  • Silent hunter & very fast

BEARBERRY ADAPTATIONS

  • Silky hairs help keep warm
  • Low growing plant helps it stay out of the wind
  • Only survives in Tundra because they only grow in dry areas

CARIBOU ADAPTATIONS

  • Split hooves to bear weight
  • Double coat to keep dry
  • Veins and arteries on side of leg so that the venous blood can keep warm
