Evaluate? ME?

DON'T WORRY ABOUT A THING!

  • Evaluations happen... so does spilled milk.
  • It's really just a bunch of standards.
  • It's the road map to improving.
  • We were all new teachers too. Ask us!
  • This is once a year until after tenure.

I'm watching you...

(seriously it's not like you think)

But why???

Purpose 1: To ensure teacher quality.
"A principal or a superintendent must be able to say to the school board and the public, "Everyone who teaches here is good - and here's how I know." (Danielson, C., 2012).

Just like we need evidence for our gradebook for parents, administration needs an evaluation.

but why???

Purpose 2: conversation
"Teacher evaluation typically serves this more developmental purpose through professional conversations between teachers and colleagues who observe in their classrooms and between teachers and supervisors following formal or informal observations." (Danielson, C. 2012).

But what does it do for me?
Evaluation provides a "Common Language for Professional Conversation"

(Danielson, C. 2012).

How do I know what's most important?
#DanielsonFramework
#Marzano Protocol

Our Tool: Practice Distinguished, Consistent with Professional Standards, Developing-Meets Minimum Standards, Not Consistent with Minimum Standards

Danielson: Levels are Unsatisfactory, Basic, Proficient, and Distinguished

Marzano: Not using, Beginning, Developing, Applying, Innovating

danielson's

framework document
The Danielson Framework consists of 4 Domains and 22 Components.

For your purposes, I would look over Component 1d, 2e, 4e, and 3d.

They correlate to our Standard 3, Standard 2, Standard 6, and Standard 5 on our tool.

marzano's

protocol
For Marzano's Protocol, there are 41 Elements and 9 Design Question.

I would look over Element #5, #19, #24, and #7 as they relate to our Standard One, Three, and Five.

our evaluation

tool----

tHE TOOLS HAVE DIFFERENCES

AND SIMILARITIES BUT COMMUNICATION IS ESSENTIAL

there's so much here!

  • Our tool: Std. 1: Engages and Supports All Students in Learning
  • Danielson: See Notes
  • Marzano: Developing: Engages students in cognitively complex tasks requiring hypothesis generation and testing and analysis of their own thinking
Danielson: Most students are intellectually engaged in the lesson.
• Most learning tasks have multiple correct responses or
approaches and/or encourage higher-order thinking.
• Students are invited to explain their thinking as part of
completing tasks.
• Materials and resources support the learning goals and
require intellectual engagement, as appropriate.
• The pacing of the lesson provides students the time
needed to be intellectually engaged.
• The teacher uses groupings that are suitable to the lesson
activities.

CLASSROOM LAYOUT

std 2:  creates and maintains effective environments for learning
CD: The classroom is safe, and all students are able to see
and hear the teacher or see the board.
• The classroom is arranged to support the instructional
goals and learning activities.
• The teacher makes appropriate use of available
technology.
• There are established guidelines concerning where
backpacks are left during class to keep the pathways
clear; students comply.
• Desks are moved together so that students can work in
small groups, or desks are moved into a circle for a class

discussion.
• The use of an Internet connection extends the lesson.

Marzano's Protocol: Example Teacher Evidence

"The physical layout of the classroom has clear traffic patterns

The physical layout of the classroom is designed to support long-term projects by individual students or groups of students

The physical layout of the classroom provides easy access to materials and centers."

The classroom is decorated in a way that enhances student learning

Bulletin boards relate to current content (e.g., word walls)

• Student work is displayed

Marzano, R. (2014)

standard six

develops as a professional educator
"The teacher regularly participates in activities related
to professional inquiry." (Danielson, C. 2012). The best way to handle the assessment portion of the evaluation is to SHARE with a colleague! Find out what assessment went well for your lesson and borrow/tweak!
Framework:
The teacher makes the standards of high-quality work
clear to students.
• The teacher elicits evidence of student understanding.
• Students are invited to assess their own work and make
improvements; most of them do so.
• Feedback includes specific and timely guidance, at least
for groups of students.

STANDARD FIVE: ASSESSES STUDENT LEARNING:
"Assessments provide opportunities for STUDENT CHOICE.

• STUDENTS PARTICIPATE in designing assessments for their

own work.
• STUDENTS DEVELOP RUBRICS
• STUDENTS ARE ACTIVELY INVOLVED in collecting information

from formative assessments and provide input." (Danielson, C. 2012).

The premise here is that Danielson is a better ticket to an effective evaluation than Marzano as, in my experience, the most important facet of teaching is the kids. What they think, know, and can demonstrate. Believe it or not, they can actually help with your evaluation! Try it!

How can i prepare?

here you go! #therubric
