  • Adverbs: modify adjectives
  • Adjectives: words that describe something

  • Becuase, the Washwoman always came to the house & one day she didn't, they & though that she died
  • Authers will try to confuse readers like this
  • Books will always have twists and make you wonder what happens, for example, "Sonata For Harp & Bicycle"

"C"

  • Characterization
  • the process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character
  • without characters, the story wouldnt be the same
  • characterization makes the story

"D"

  • Della
  • she is from "The Gift of the Maji"
  • her most prized possession is her hair
  • she cuts it off, to pay for the gift for her husband

"E"

  • Ending of a story
  • Surprise Ending: often presents a situational irony, and writers use irony to build suspense as to whats going to happen, help convey to the story's theme, or message

"F"

  • Fiction or Nonfiction?
  • a story could be either
  • fiction: imaginary, not real
  • nonfiction: realistic

  • "Gift of the Maji"
  • main characters: Della, and Jim
  • theme: both sell what they love to buy each other a gift

  • just always look for intensifiers
  • ex: The big house was blue!
  • the intensifier was "big"

  • keep in mind: the parts of speech in a sentence
  • nouns, adjectives, adverbs and pronouns

"L"

  • Locate irony
  • "A no smoking sign, on your cigarette break."
  • this shows irony because; you wouldn't expect there to be a "no cigarette" sign on your smoking break

"M"

  • Making predictions
  • while reading a story;
  • You need to take into account the characters, plot and theme

"N"

  • Nominatives in a sentence
  • ex: i, you, he, she, it, they, and we
  • "I hope you get better."
  • "I" is the nominative in the sentence

"O"

  • Objective
  • ex: purpose, or intention
  • ex: "I am determined to win."
  • The objective in the sentence, is "determined"

"P"

  • Prepositions
  • ex: on, in and beside
  • ex: "The puppy is on the floor."
  • The preposition is, "on"

"Q"

  • Questions
  • while reading a story, you must continually ask questions
  • who is the main character? where is the story taking place?

"R"

  • Reflexive Pronouns
  • ex: myself, ourself, himself, ourselves
  • "I saw myself in the mirror."
  • the ref The reflexive pronoun is, "myself"

"S"

  • Singular nouns
  • ex: bottle, cup, pencil and desk
  • "The bottle of milk was in the trashcan."
  • the singular noun is, "bottle"

"T"

  • "The Secret Life of Walter"
  • "The Washwoman"
  • "The Gift of the Maji"
  • these are all stories that give examples of predictions and inferences

"U"

  • understanding things in a story
  • whether you're discussing the plot or the theme
  • you need to understand the different elements

"V"

  • Verb Phrases
  • ex: She was walking quickly to the mall.
  • the verb phrase is, "walking quickly"

"W"

  • what's the difference between verbs and adverbs
  • verbs: they are a type of part of speech
  • adverbs: modifies or qualifies an adjective or verb
  • ex of verbs: running, walking & swimming
  • ex of adverbs: endlessly, financially & quickly
