WHAT IS HARMFUL ABOUT LARGE AGE GAPS IN COUPLES?

Our class novel for this quarter was The Great Gatsby. It was written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. As all of you may know. My essential question is "what is harmful about large age gaps in couples?"

BACKGROUND
Age gaps occur when the members of a couple are not the same age. Extreme age gaps are when the members are over 10 years a part. For some reason, these types of age gaps in relationships occur mainly in celebrity couples, as shown in the pictures. Crawford writes "When you bring home a partner who is significantly older or significantly younger than you, then inevitably there are some eyebrows raised and people start to talk"(1). These age gaps lead to many difficulties for the couple. With my research, I came up with 8 difficulties these couples face.

#1: Different Stages of Life
Because the members come from different generations, they differ in world views and much more. They often have different levels of education and have different experiences. Sometimes, their mental age can differ, which means their mental maturity is on different degrees. These age gaps and different stages of life lead to disagreements and arguments.

#2: Feelings of Abandonment
Those in relationships with large age gaps feel abandoned by their loved ones who don't have faith in their relationship. They feel hurt that their peers and family don't respect and support them. Most feel lonely that they don't have a team of supporters because they've lost their peers and relatives.

#3: Multitude of Issues
These couples face a surplus of issues concerning their future. When it comes to thinking about their future, couples typically feel overwhelmed with worry and fear that their issues will prevent them from having a happy and successful life. Their minds become a mess of thoughts as they try to organize their partnership. Most of these issues revolve around the aftermath of marriage, such as children. A lot of these couples find it difficult to have children due to their age differences.

#4: Wrong Motives
Relatives and friends with loved ones in relationships with age gaps often question their motives. Most ask if the younger partner jumped into a relationship with someone older for the money and benefits that came with the relationship.

#5: Decline of the Relationship
Even though the relationship might be full of love and happiness in the beginning, eventually the age gap will get to them. Studies have shown married couples with age gaps struggle with financial and relational stability because of their different views and education. Also, the longevity of their happiness in the relationship wanes when they start to realize the gravity of their age difference.

#6: Difference in Times of Death
If the age gap is too large, it means one member will die significantly before the other. This leads the "leftover" individual feeling lonely and empty, especially if they have no children.

#7: Judgement from Outsiders
Quite often, age gaps in couples are noticeable. To be frank, one always looks older than the other. Sometimes if the age gap is extremely noticeable people will stare and gossip about the couple. Of course, this gossip can deeply harm the person it is about.

#8: Increased Possibility of Divorce
Age gaps in marriages often lead to divorce. The combination of different views, education, perspectives, and maturity leads to the downfall of their relationships. Randal Olson, from Michigan State University, conducted a survey that studied the divorce rates of couples with age gaps. Gaps of five years result in 18% chance of getting divorced. Ten years are 39%. And 20 years are 95%. These statistics came from the article "The Bigger the Age Gap, the Shorter the Marriage."

RESONANCE WITH NOVEL
During one of Gatsby's wild parties, young women danced with older men. This leads us to question the acceptability of the age gaps between these men and women. They are at different stages of life and probably differ in their world viewpoints, but still managed to dance as couples. An example of their differences revolves around alcohol. The young women were oblivious to the types of alcohol served at the party, drank whatever was available, and got drunk. On the other hand, the men were familiar with alcohol and knew their limitations. The drunken, young women hit it off with the older men, who most likely knew the gravity and inappropriateness of the situation.
