Winter Survival Challenge

Hypothermia

  • occurs when the body temperature is below 35*C
  • Symptoms: slowing of the heart rate and breathing dilated pupils and coma. They may appear dead.
  • Who is at risk? People in 10*C for a long time, in water at 20*C, babies and young children and people with low body fat.

  • Prevention: dress warm, stay dry and get out of the cold.
  • Treatment: remove any wet clothes and give them something warm to drink
  • Do not use direct heat instead use a warm blanket, do not rub the people

Fire Building

  • Three things that fire needs is heat, oxygen and fuel.
  • It is important to gather lots of fuel like twigs, bark and logs. Try to find dry ones.
  • Put small sticks in the bottom and make a teepee with the big logs above it.

  • Different ways to start a fire with heat is matches, a lighter or sparks.
  • It is important to make a fire because it keeps you warm and it helps you cook.

Shelter

  • It needs to be strong and protect you from the weather and the cold
  • Sleep on some leaves so your body is not right on the ground, this is called a bough bed
  • Try to build it under a tree for extra protection

  • Make it out of branches with leaves, big pieces of wood, bark, sometimes rocks and leaves for the bottom

Food

  • Keep hydrated!!!! You could put snow in a sock and melt it over the fire.
  • You should not drink lots of cold snow because it lowers your body temperature.
  • If you are going out into the woods you should always pack snacks like, watermelon, granola bars, trail mix and beef jerky.

  • If you need to find food look for berries, boil leaves in water and maybe go hunting for meat.
  • Make sure to save food for when you are hungry later and eat a little food before bed to warm up your body.
