"Hands up don't shoot"

Published on Nov 19, 2015

In this presentation I asked Segen Begen who lived in Oakland when the riots were happening. What it felt like being in the middle of all this anger and was it life changing .

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

"Hands up don't shoot"

The view point from Segen Begen

Initial "Shock"

  • " When I first heard about the riot happening in Oakland I wasn't surprised or shocked. I was relieved that finally someone was paying attention to what happened behind closed doors in the governments office. Finally people of color were no longer afraid to stand up for what they believed in we became warriors in a room full of hunger savages."
  • "Even though the initial shock wasn't truly a shock .The Oakland riot sparked a hunger in me that i tried to had an become oblivious of . I am a black women who will eventually have a black son who i will have to tell that due to what you cant control you will have to be on guard even when the media pictures you as a brainless angry animal"
  • After talking to Segen I wanted to see the true media in my own eyes . I began to youtube news videos and was disgusted with the results and wondering how anyone would air this . In one of the fox news episodes someone says " These people will kill you then go eat a box of chicken afterwards." Than I realized that the media airs this just so it can get into a black person head and make them beliver this is in fact true.

"New Black "

  • During the riots there was this new term called "new black" A term used for black people who decide to go against what they see and create this imaginary scenario. Instead of fight they become victims of it .
  • "When I watched the video were raven symone said that she "Did not want to be labeled as a black person." I was furious.I had to ask myself what happens in a Hollywood were a strong black child becomes a gullible woman ."
  • "The vidoe also showed me the power of media .Even though I don't agree with Raven Symone i get were her idea came from. when you look on line the word black is always tide together with something negative and dirty."

The After Math

  • " I became more black conscious . I began to read up on my true black history and discovered that a lot of things were taken away fro me and labeled as theirs. Yes it made me very angry but I decided to put my energy into something else and join a black organization in Oakland that's helping but this anger into something positive and beneficial to the communty "
  • "One thing I would want the reader to get from this presentation is that oppression can always lead to strentgh if your whilling to fight through the pain "
