WHO IS FERDINAND MAGELLAN?

  • Born in 1480 in Portugal.
  • He was inspired to explore after hearing stories about Christopher Columbus.
  • As a page for the Queen of Portugal, he studied music, dance, hunting and fighting.
  • Killed by a stick with poison on it on April 27, 1521.
  • He was trying to find new lands for Portugal.

WHAT DID FERDINAND MAGELLAN DO?

  • Ferdinand Magellan was a sailor.
  • Magellan was famous for finding a shortcut waterway at the tip of South America to get from the east coast to the west coast.
  • He changed everyone's understanding of the world and showed it was much bigger than they thought.
  • He showed that the oceans were all connected so you could sail around the world.
  • The shortcut waterway is called the Strait of Magellan.

WHERE DID FERDINAND MAGELLAN DO HIS EXPLORATIONS?

  • 1520 found waterway near tip of South America.
  • This allowed sailors to save time in their travels.
  • Instead having to go around the entire tip of South America, they could cut through it.

  • Began exploring in 1519.
  • 1520 found the shortcut waterway.

WHY DID FERDINAND MAGELLAN GO EXPLORING?

  • He went exploring because many People explored unknown areas to claim more land for their countries.
  • He wanted to be Columbus and Vasco Da Gama.
  • Interested in finding new lands.
  • Wanted to find a new route to the Spice Islands.

HOW DID FERDINAND MAGELLAN EXPLORE?

  • His ships in his fleet were called the Trinidad, the Conception, the Victoria and The Santiago.
  • Needed food.
  • Needed water.
  • Needed supplies like warm clothes and maps to survive.
  • King of Spain gave him money to do carry out his explorations.

HOW DID THINGS CHANGE IN THE WORLD AFTER FERDINAND MAGELLAN'S EXPLORATIONS?

  • His voyage changed everyone's understanding of world.
  • He showed that the world is bigger than people thought it was. He showed that most of the world is made out of water, not land.
  • He showed that the oceans are all connected.

REFLECTIVE COMMENT

  • I think that Magellan was a risk-taker and he and he was a very nice person who always wanted to do hard challenges. I think that he was very caring to everyone because he found it a shortcut waterway near the tip of South America so people could save months and months of travelling.
