PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Louisiana Deputy Shot While Directing Traffic
Authorities say that a 36-year-old Louisiana sheriff's deputy was directing traffic in a school zone in Paradis when he was shot three times.
Sheriff Greg Champagne says that Burt Hazeltine was directing traffic in the town of Paradis, which is just west of New Orleans, when he was shot Thursday morning.
Sheriff Greg Champagne identifies the suspect as 58-year-old John Paul Devillier, of Gulfport, Mississippi. He was captured shortly after the shooting.
Hazeltine remained in stable but guarded condition at a New Orleans hospital Thursday afternoon. He was shot in the eye, chest and elbow.
It is believed that the shooter got angry when he couldn't take a left turn on U.S. Highway 90 in Paradis. He left the scene after speaking to Hazeltine, but soon returned to fire at the deputy from his pickup truck.
