BIOGRAPHY

Oprah Gail Winfrey was born January 29, 1954 in Kosciusko, Mississippi. As determined through a DNA test Oprah's ethnicity includes African (Kpelle, Bamileke, and Zambian) 8% Native American, and 3% East Asian. She was born to an unwed teenager and spent her first few years growing up at her grandmother's farm in Mississippi while her mother hunted for work.

Under the strict guidance of her grandmother, she learned to read at two and a half years old. At that age she also addressed her church congregation about "When Jesus Rose on Easter Day". At age three Oprah was reciting poems and Bible verses regularly in local churches. Oprah skipped kindergarten after writing a note to her teacher on the first day of school saying she belonged in the first grade. She was promoted to third grade after that year.

As a child, Winfrey entertained herself by play acting in front of an audience of her grandmother's farm animals. Despite the hardships of her physical environment, she enjoyed the loving support of her grandmother and the church community, who cherished her as a gifted child. At six years old Winfrey was sent north to live with her mother and two half-brothers in a dangerous Milwaukee ghetto. At twelve years old she was then sent to live with her father in Nashville, Tennessee. Feeling secure and happy for once she began making speeches at social gatherings and churches, and one time earned five hundred dollars for a speech. This is how she decided she wanted to be "paid to talk” for the rest of her life.

CONTRIBUTIONS

Oprah's ongoing battle with weight has kept her human and sympathetic in many viewers hearts. She's living proof that all the money in the world can't buy you a size 6 body if you're struggling. But in 1988 she shocked everyone by shedding off 67 lbs by going on Optifast and pretty much eating nothing for four months. Sadly, she ruined her metabolism with the diet and has been going up and down ever since. Oprah has taught people how to accept others who are not like them. Viewers barely blink an eye now at popular shows like "Modern Family" and "Glee," which feature gay couples and kids in wheelchairs.

Oprah managed to create a growing demand for just what viewpoints and lessons she had to offer. The 1980s and 1990s were a period when the country was moving toward a cultural emphasis on the responsibility to focus on your own life and change it. Her viewpoints on life opened up a lot of america's eyes and they made great changes for their personal lives.

WHAT OPRAH TAUGHT ME

From Oprah I had learned in order to do what you really want to do in life you have to work hard for it. I also learned to accept others as they are and to be optimistic in every situation that is thrown at me.

H.U.N.T
H- Oprah used what she called her Vision Board. She put pictures on a board to represent her plan to put it in visual perspective.
U- Oprah's Vision Boards helped with her roadblocks. By putting plan in visual perspective she was able to see the possible hazards towards her plan and also planned how to avoid them.
N- Oprah partnered with Harpo Productions and Discovery Communications to develop her own TV channel, The Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN).
T- Oprah made the first step towards her fame by opening up and taking part in speeches in Tennessee. She gained popularity through her viewpoints and optimism.
