History

The genocide

The genocide in Rwanda was one of the bloodiest episodes of storia.

From 6 April to mid-July of 1994at about 500,000 people were massacred.

The victims were predominantly Tutsi.

The idea of a racial difference between Hutus and Tutsis is linked to the first Belgian colonialism in Africa.

The Belgian colonists were based on the observation of the physical aspect.

The Tutsi were a minority compared to the Hutus, while the Twa were a different group still less numerous.

You could go from one group to another.

The difference was mainly social type: the Tutsi were the richest of the Hutu and the last rung of the social ladder were the Twa.

But it was not definitive, anyone could improve their condition.

The Belgian colonizers made the mistake of considering these groups as of racial divisions.

After bloody riots and massacres, the Hutu, with the agreement of the Belgians, took power in 1959-1962 and began the long persecution of Tutsis.

Economy

The Rwandan economy is based on small farms that practice subsistence farming.

The cultivation of tea and coffee are very important.

Major exports are coffee , tea , tin , cassiterite and pyrethrum .
