THE RED BADGE OF COURAGE BY STEPHEN CRANE

How does faith assist a soldier in healing from effects of war?

THE EFFECTS OF WAR ON SOLDIERS

Soldiers risk a lot to fight for America and become affected by war. Soldiers suffer from depression and PTSD or post traumatic stress disorder by what they have seen from war. The combat in war traumatizes or scars the soldiers causing them to react when they are home in a safe environment. Depression affects soldiers because they think about the lives lost in war and the coldness of war.

In "Healing PTSD by restoring faith" by Makenna Berry, it discusses how faith can affect someone healing from Post- traumatic stress syndrome. Soldiers are unfortunately the top group for being diagnosed with PTSD from combat. War causes deep scarring on them and causes them to feel at fault constantly for the deaths of their men and their enemy. PTSD is a disorder that constantly reminds someone of trauma they have witnessed and causes them to feel guilt and anxiety. This forces them to accept that they have lost faith in their lives. In this source, they did an experiment where soldiers would recite verses from their religion when they would feel anxious and before bed. "The mantra practice may have given them a sense that there is a higher power or inner strength that is there to help them overcome their pain. The practice opened them up to a greatness that will support them in dealing with their trauma" (Berry). This practice was able to help the soldiers because it gave them something to put their faith in and allowed them to feel secure.

This supports my essential question by proving that faith can help soldiers when healing from PTSD and depression. Faith is putting trust in something and a religious faith is putting life and trust into it, devoting a life to it. Soldiers are able to benefit from faith in their military distress because it causes them to feel as if their life is not their own and that they have served their purpose. It is a fact that veterans commit suicide from their depression and not having something to put their trust in other than family. Faith allows them to grip on something to keep their stress away and focus on the good they have done by serving their country and protecting the people in it. Faith can help heal soldiers from the effects of war.
