Definition

  • As the Spanish American war was going on, the united states forces to launch their invasion and go into puerto rico.A 108 mile long, and 40 miles wide island was secured by american troops under the general Nelson A. The troops raised a flag and now was officially territory of the united states

Cause

  • After the Spanish American War, The U.S. stayed in Puerto Rico to try and help establish their economy. The Puerto Ricans did not like how the Spanish ruled, and assisted the United States in the victory.

Characteristics

  • after three decades of its rule, the united states government granted U.S citizenship to the Puerto Ricans in the 1917. In the beginning of 1948, Puerto Rico elected their own governor in 1917 the US government decided to make english the official language of puerto rico.

More Characteristics

  • In december the treaty of paris was signed, which had the spanish american war end and officially approved puerto rico part of the united states.

Significance

  • Puerto Rico is still a United States Territory today. Because we stayed involved after the Spanish American war, the U.S was able to advance Puerto Rico's economy and status.
